John grew up on the southwest fringe of Chicago's suburbia, where strip malls and tract housing are the norm. Luckily, nearby forest preserves instilled in him a love of the outdoors. After completing a degree in aeronautical engineering, John took a job at a helicopter company on the East Coast, where he explored his outdoor interests as well as photography and design in his free time. Realizing he'd rather have his "job" be more aligned with his interests (and knowing he was at best a mediocre snowboarder), John quit his engineering job to go to architecture school to learn the tools and processes of design. At Studio Gang, John is ecstatic that his job isn’t just a job, but really one of the things he loves to do.
