In the Belden Loft, an interior courtyard replaces the typical external loft balcony. This courtyard, open to the sky, allows light and weather into the center of the space. Upstairs the elements of the bath are dispersed around a courtyard. Verticality of the exterior void assists in ventilating both floors by creating a stack effect. Materials include both “rough” and “fine” finishes. Douglas fir, which is used for a large display wall at the entry, emphasizes the art collection's materiality, while the courtyard's slender steel frame suggests its lightness and precision.
