Zhong Bang Village

Customizing the Courtyard House for Contemporary Urbanism

Location

Shanghai / China

Architect

Studio Gang Architects

Status

Design Completed 2003

The Zhong Bang Village project challenges contemporary practices of residential construction in China by transforming the traditional courtyard house typology to meet contemporary lifestyles. Here, the proposed “courtyard fabric” is customized to respond to environmental conditions such as sun and wind, and to maximize social and recreational use of the ground plane. With 90% of the courtyard dwellings having semi-public and private courtyards, the remaining towers offer high-rise living with unencumbered views, creating an identifiable landmark for the village.
