Baseball and the City

Exploring Density and Change on an Urban Scale

Location

Art Institute of Chicago / Chicago / USA

Architect

Studio Gang Architects

Status

Completed 2004

Chosen by competition to participate in the Art Institute of Chicago’s “Chicago Architecture: 10 Visions” exhibition, Studio Gang created the “Baseball in the City” installation that uses Chicago’s two baseball stadiums as the lens through which issues of density and change on an urban scale are explored. Discoveries about the respective urban environments of Wrigley and U.S. Cellular Fields are illustrated through drawings, photographs, statistics, and graphic diagrams. Architectural models propose four visionary transformations for U.S. Cellular Field that are intended to reintegrate it into the life of the city.

The exhibit space is defined by a 15 foot high wall created out of 15,000 baseball cards, each of which contains information about the city. Visitors can read the individual cards up close, while at a distance they resolve into a large image.
